Finding Signs of Mice in Your Home? Here’s How to Deal

As the leaves begin to turn and the air becomes crisp, fall is one of the most beautiful seasons to embrace. However, with the arrival of autumn, many people start to notice signs of mice in their homes. In this blog, we’ll explore how to spot signs of mice tend to find their way indoors during the fall and how to deal with this common seasonal nuisance.

Common Signs of Mice

1. Sightings: One of the most obvious signs of mice in the home, is seeing one for yourself. These animals are most active at night, but can be seen at any time of day if their hiding place is disturbed.

2. Droppings: If mice have made their way into your home, they will unfortunately leave droppings. These are not to be confused with cockroaches, as their general size and appearance of these droppings are similar. Mouse droppings are approximately 3 to 6 mm long and rod-shaped with pointed ends, whereas cockroaches’ are not.

3. Foot Prints: A telltale sign of mice is finding their tracks in the house. Look out for the distinct pattern of a four-toed front foot and a five-toed back footprint.

4. Chewed Items: Mice are known for their ability to chew on a wide variety of items. Teetha and gnaw marks can be found on corners of objects around the house, on boxes stored away, or in walls.

Dealing With Mice in the Home

Now that we know how to spot signs of mice during the fall let’s explore how to effectively deal with these uninvited guests.

1. Seal Entry Points: Mice can fit through incredibly small openings, so sealing any potential entry points is crucial. Check for cracks in your walls, gaps in doors and windows, and any holes in the foundation.

2. Maintain a Clean Home: A clean home is less attractive to mice. Store food in airtight containers, regularly clean up crumbs and spills, and promptly remove the trash.

3. Use Traps: Classic snap traps and modern, humane traps can effectively capture mice. Place them in areas where you’ve seen mouse activity.

4. Consider Natural Deterrents: Some people use natural deterrents like peppermint oil or mothballs to keep mice at bay. These can work, but their effectiveness varies.

5. Professional Pest Control: If the infestation is severe, consider hiring a professional pest control service to safely and effectively eliminate the problem.

Preventing Future Infestations

Preventing mice from entering your home during fall and any other time of the year is essential. Here are some long-term measures to keep these critters at bay:

1. Regular Maintenance: Keep your home well-maintained. Repair any structural damage and fix leaks as soon as they appear.

2. Landscaping: Trim trees and shrubs near your home, as mice can use these as bridges to access your property.

3. Store Firewood Away: If you have a fireplace, store firewood away from your home. Mice can often find their way into your house via woodpiles.
